Car Loan Interest Deduction Calculator

Which vehicles qualify: the US final assembly and VIN test

The car loan interest deduction is only as good as the vehicle behind it. A loan on a vehicle that fails the qualification test produces no deduction, even if you paid thousands in interest. This guide walks through each condition.

New, personal use, and under 14,000 pounds

The vehicle must be new rather than used, and bought for personal use rather than for a business fleet or resale. Its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) must be under 14,000 pounds, which comfortably covers ordinary cars, pickup trucks, SUVs, vans, and motorcycles. Leases do not qualify, because a lease is not a loan secured by the vehicle.

Final assembly in the United States

The headline condition is that the vehicle's final assembly took place in the United States. This is a specific, checkable fact, not a judgment about the brand. Some models sold by US automakers are assembled abroad, and some models from foreign automakers are assembled in US plants. Do not assume by logo. Two reliable sources tell you the truth for a specific vehicle: the window sticker (the Monroney label), which lists the final assembly point, and the VIN, which encodes the assembly plant. If you are shopping, ask for the VIN and confirm before you count on the deduction.

Report the VIN on your return

To claim the deduction you must report the vehicle identification number on your tax return. The VIN ties the deduction to a specific qualifying vehicle, so keep it with your loan records. A loan that otherwise qualifies still needs the VIN reported to support the deduction.

Loan conditions

The loan must be secured by the vehicle, originate after December 31, 2024, and come from an unrelated lender rather than a relative. Refinancing an existing qualifying loan can still qualify as long as the terms continue to meet the conditions, but a loan taken out before 2025 or from a family member does not.

Use the calculator once you have confirmed eligibility. This guide is general information, not tax advice; confirm your specific vehicle and loan with the seller, the assembly documentation, and a tax professional where needed.
